Asian Eyelid Surgery

Nearly half of the Asian population does not have a fold/crease above the eyelashes. Many individuals who would like to correct this feature may choose to undergo Asian double eyelid surgery (“Asian blepharoplasty”). At Enhance ® Medical Center, Inc., Charles S. Dr. Lee performs Asian eyelid surgery by not trying to “westernize” the Asian face, but by creating a crease that looks natural. He typically performs the double sutures and twisting method (DST), which is a non-incision double Asian eye surgery approach. The DST technique is a more sophisticated technique than the traditional suture method, which has often been criticized for the high breakage rates and indistinct folds. The DST method has a very low breakage rate, and Dr. Lee is the only North American plastic surgeon directly trained in this unique suture technique.

During this procedure, Dr. Lee will create a crease by first securing one of the sutures to the firmest structures of the upper eyelid, the tarsal plate, which is made of a strong cartilage. The other end of the suture is interlinked to the adjacent suture, which resemble two links on a chain. The DST Asian upper eyelid surgery is considered a virtually scar-free approach, which helps the patient achieve a natural-looking crease.
